Discretionary Grant

Dear Stakeholders

Your passion and interest in skills development was very clear in the high number of applications we received for the latest funding window. We thank you and appreciate your commitment. We are aware that the deadline for feedback on your Discretionary Grant Window 3 (DG3) application has been communicated as being 31 July 2010.

The merSETA Governing Board (comprising Industry representatives for both Employer and Labour) has made a decision to postpone awarding DG3 at this stage.

You are advised that applying for Discretionary Grants does not mean that your organisation is guaranteed this grant. Discretionary Grants are allocated at the discretion of the SETA according to various requirements and criteria. Our DG Technical Committee, comprising stakeholders as well as merSETA management are tasked with allocating funds taking the following into consideration:

• Scarce and critical skills in our industry

• Budget available

• Endeavouring also to spread the allocations as widely and fairly as possible.

The Governing Board, however, is the only authority that can award the grants.

Therefore, please be aware that Learners/Apprentices already enrolled (in any learning area) at your organisation in lieu of receiving the grant applied for in DG3, was done on your own accord.

Please look out for a further communiqué regarding this matter towards the end of August.
